Are you or your students passionate about the history of the medieval world?

CEU’s Department of Medieval Studies offers MA and PhD programs on all aspects of the history and culture of the period from 300 to 1600 CE. International faculty members cover Central and Western Europe as well as the Byzantine, Slavic, Mongol, Jewish, Arab and Ottoman worlds from various angles and through various disciplines. We boast a highly spirited, multicultural student body, and a growing network of alumni in education, research, cultural institutions, business and international organizations. Our department also participates in the Erasmus+ Program. See what our students and faculty have to say about us here. If you are interested to get a closer look at the research our students are doing, we highly recommend our recent roundtable on trans-, inter- and multidisciplinarity, and to survey the thesis and dissertation topics of our MA and PhD alumni.

Let us tell you more about why CEU might be the best choice for your or your students’ graduate studies.

Vienna / Budapest

CEU is an English-language university in Vienna, which offers predominantly graduate degrees. While the teaching takes place here, we also offer research possibilities in Budapest during the academic year.

Lively community

We regularly organize international interdisciplinary conferences in which the participation of our students is not only welcome but very much encouraged. Watch the summary video of our 2018 event “Coping with Crisis” and the recordings of our “Medievalisms on the Screen” conference from 2021. To catch another glimpse of what excites us, tune in to the CEU Medieval Radio, a twenty-four-hour webcast about medieval history and culture.

If you would like to get notifications from us about upcoming workshops, conferences as well as our public lecture series that runs from September until April, please, sign up here.

Source language courses

CEU’s Source Language Teaching Group (SLTG) offers students year-round courses in less commonly taught languages, including Ancient Greek, Latin, Arabic, Persian, Classical Syriac, Ottoman Turkish, Modern Hebrew, Yiddish and Russian, to equip students with the necessary tools to work with important research sources in their original language.

Tuition fee

The tuition for MA students per academic year is 12,000EUR, to be paid in two installments at the beginning and the middle of the academic year.
