Webinar - The Middle Ages and Us

On Friday 2 December, the department hosted a webinar for prospective students on The Middle Ages and Us. The discussion ranged from the birth of the nation state to racism in modern media. We also discussed the opportunities of studying in Vienna, including the access to numerous historical sites, and the ease to reaching conferences across Europe and the Near East. The discussion was followed by questions from prospective students about the application process.

Medieval Dances - Singing Group

The Department is pleased to support the establishment of a new student-led group dedicated to singing music from medieval dances.

The first song sung will be the famous "Gaudete". The dance is “La Folia,” which is from the Baroque period, but music itself comes from Middle Ages.  

The group currently meets on Tuesday and Wednesday lunchtimes, between 12:45 and 13:15 in A-211. Check back here for more updates or, for more details, email: Mirianashvili_Tinati@student.ceu.edu.

The Department of Medieval Studies is pleased to announce a new publication co-edited by our faculty member István Perczel.

The contributors to this volume - specialists in Late Antique and Byzantine, Syriac, Georgian, Armenian, and Arabic studies - have investigated the construction of Christian historiographic traditions from the fourth to the eighth century at geographic, linguistic and disciplinary borders.

János Bak Award

For the 2023-24 academic year, the János Bak Research Fellowship board is offering two awards of 2000 EUR each to support study in one of the MA programs in Medieval Studies at CEU. The funding is intended to cover part of the costs associated with studying in Vienna for any applicant with a particular interest in the medieval history of Central, East-Central and Eastern Europe. Award-winners in the 2-year program will have their awards renewed for the second year of study, subject to the successful defense of the thesis prospectus and a GPA above 3.5.
