Letters of support

The Hungarian government has proposed amendments to the National Higher Education Law that would make it impossible for Central European University – and possibly other international institutions – to continue operations within the country. These changes would endanger the academic freedom vital for CEU’s continued operation in Budapest and would strike a blow against the academic freedom that enables all universities to flourish. It is time for friends, supporters, and educational and academic communities to defend our institution and the independence of higher education institutions around the globe.

In addition to the huge number of declarations of support received by CEU, many of our Department's friends, partner institutions and alumni expressed their support.

The position of the Association of Hungarian Archaeologists concerning the law proposal influencing CEU

The board of the Association of Hungarian Archaeologists is deeply astonished by the proposed amendments (No. T/14686) to the National Higher Education Law (2011/CCIV). If passed, the change in the legislation would seriously endanger academic freedom and it would make it impossible for the Central European University / Közép-európai Egyetem to operate in Hungary.

"At least half of the news on FB this morning, not by chance, has been connected to CEU. As a former student of the first official year of Medieval Studies at CEU and one who continues her contacts with the department, I would like to proffer some points of view, hoping that they will be understood. Yes, CEU was founded by George Soros. Yes, there is a Department of Medieval Studies at CEU because János Bak and Gábor Klaniczay persuaded him about the importance of investigating and teaching about the Middle Ages.

THE MEDIEVAL ACADEMY OF AMERICA

April 4, 2017
Dear Minister Balog,
As the governing body of the Medieval Academy of America, the largest organization in the world devoted to supporting the study of the European Middle Ages, we are writing to express solidarity with Central European University and express concern at proposed legislative changes to CEU’s status in Hungary. These changes would endanger the academic freedom vital for CEU’s continued operation in Budapest and would strike a blow against the academic freedom that enables all universities, including those in Hungary, to flourish.
