Letters of support

The Hungarian government has proposed amendments to the National Higher Education Law that would make it impossible for Central European University – and possibly other international institutions – to continue operations within the country. These changes would endanger the academic freedom vital for CEU’s continued operation in Budapest and would strike a blow against the academic freedom that enables all universities to flourish. It is time for friends, supporters, and educational and academic communities to defend our institution and the independence of higher education institutions around the globe.

In addition to the huge number of declarations of support received by CEU, many of our Department's friends, partner institutions and alumni expressed their support.

Dear HE President Ader,

Ta Nea, Greek daily newspaper

April 10, 2017

An article was published in Ta Nea, a Greek daily newspaper about CEU's current situation.

The article talks about CEU's highly accomplished studies, its value as an intellectual institution but also focuses on its global, multicultural and critical character. It also stresses Orban's attitude against academic freedom and places the decision about CEU within his broader political framework. The last paragraph marks that the situation of absolutism in Europe becomes more and more "our affair" , since we deal with phenomena such as the increase of  Le Pen in France.

Tisztelt Miniszter Úr!

Kétségtelen, hogy a gazdag hagyományokra visszatekintő peregrinációk történetéből Ön is tudja: az előző évszázadokban számos fiatal diák megfordult nyugati egyetemeken, és tért haza Erdélybe tudásban, lélekben gazdagodva. Ők jelentős mértékben hozzájárultak a magyar tudományosság fellendüléséhez; de erdélyiségünk, illetve magyarságunk megőrzéséhez, megmaradásához is.
