Medieval Conference, Lleida 2011

July 10, 2011

The Consolidated Medieval Studies Research Group “Space, Power and Culture” (www.medieval.udl.cat) at the University of Lleida organised a multidisciplinary medieval congress between 28 June and 1 July 2011. Flocel Sabaté, professor of medieval history in Lleida and his team presented a challenging program at this first International Medieval Meeting.  The papers of the conference were distributed among six thematic strands: “Memory and Middle Ages,” “Crises in the Middle Ages: War and Famine,” “The Medieval City and Archaeology,” “Sacred Voices in Jews’ Texts,” “Cartography of the Soul: Identity, Memory and Writing,” “Late Gothic Painting in the Crown of Aragon and the Hispanic Kingdom.” The keynote lecture, titled “A winter's Tale: A Feature of Medieval Peasant Life,” was delivered by William Jordan (Princeton University).  As part of this conference, Balázs Nagy, representing the CEU, organised a business meeting about the current research projects and publications of the Medieval Studies Department.

The city of Lleida with its astonishing medieval cathedral, Seu Vella, and the university with its hospitable organizing team provided a congenial environment for this first meeting.
