Vehicle decoration is a well-known phenomenon in many Asian countries, in the Middle East, Africa and the Americas. Various versions of decorated cars, buses, and trucks are particularly widespread and elaborate in the countries of the Indian Subcontinent: Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, as well as in Afghanistan, both in the towns and along the vast network of roads running in the landscape. The decoration of vehicles is a serious business, involving thousands of craftsmen. This knowledge as well as the objects are a part of cultural heritage in these countries. The carefully selected motifs reflect the social environment, the religious beliefs, superstitions, and overall worldviews of their owners and drivers. The exhibition will present a selection of photographs taken by Konstantin Novaković, alumnus of the Cultural Heritage Studies Program at CEU, who travelled all over the region during his fieldwork. The images will be accompanied by a brief summary of Konstantin’s original research results in this hardly known field of vernacular art.
A közúti járművek díszítése közismert jelenség számos ázsiai országban, a Közel-keleten, Afrikában, és az amerikai kontinensen is. Az autók, buszok, teherkocsik festése különösen jellemző és gazdag az indiai szubkontinens országaiban – Pakisztánban, Indiában, Bangladesben, Nepálban, Sri Lankán – és Afganisztánban, mind a városokban, mind a tájat átszelő utak hálózatán. A járművek díszítése önálló ágazat, több ezer mester foglalkozik ezzel. Ez a tudás és technológia, valamint maguk a járművek is részét képezik a régió kulturális örökségének. A gondosan kiválasztott motívumok jellemzőek a tulajdonosok és sofőrök társadalmi környezetére, kifejezik vallásukat, hiedelemvilágukat, és általában a világról alkotott képüket. A kiállítás Konstantin Novaković, a CEU Kulturális Örökség Tanulmányok Program végzett diákjának fotóiból készült, aki terepmunkája során beutazta ezt a földrajzi régiót. A fényképválogatást kísérő szövegek Konstantin kutatásának eredményei alapján röviden összefoglalják mindazt, amit erről a kevéssé ismert népművészeti műfajról tudni lehet.
