Workshop on the Csörsz Ditch
The Csörsz Ditch is an ancient ditch and dyke system that frames the wetlands that covered the central part of the Hungarian Plain along almost one thousand kilometres between two points of the River Danube. Its two endpoints and its certain elements that crossed the Plain from east to west lean on the Roman Limes. The broad discussion that once took place about the origin and the primeval function of the Csörsz Ditch concluded that it marked the border of Sarmatia in the Roman Period.
The workshop aims to interpret or reinterpret the ancient earthwork in the context of the spatial structure of the Hungarian Plain in the light of recent reconstructions of the route and settlement structure of the Carpathian Basin. It also attempts to present the results of the protection of cultural and natural heritage and outline a future perspective for heritage management, and aims to provide an international forum for experts and support partnerships and networks that may emerge in common projects in the fields of research and heritage management.
