The workshop commemorates the 100th birth anniversary of Erik Fügedi (1916-1992), one of the most innovative medievalists of twentieth-century Hungary. In János M. Bak’s words, “Erik Fügedi belongs to that generation which inherited both the values and problems of historical Hungary and tried to rescue its intellectual achievements while overcoming its national and social prejudices.” For achieving this, Fügedi used not only the toolkit of a well-trained historian and archivist, but applied already in the 1970s the fundamentally new agenda of the Annales school: sociological, anthropological and even psychological approaches to medieval society, as well as quantification, complex statistical analysis and demographic perspectives .

The event gathers as speakers first and foremost former colleagues and close collaborators, as well as some students of Erik Fügedi.
