Henri Pirenne, erstwhile professor of the University of Gent was a formative figure of early 20th century European historiography. His works on the transition period between Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages andon the urbanisation of medieval Europe represent an often debated, but today still relevant viewpoint. The workshop which will include the participation of well-known foreign and Hungarian scholars will reconsider his concepts on the basis of recent research, as well as discussing new approaches tothe problems examined earlier by Pirenne.

The workshop is co-organised and sponsored by the Department of Medieval and Early Modern European History at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), by the Department of Medieval Studies of Central European University (CEU) by the Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies, CEU and by the Flemish Representation in Hungary.
