Thesis Writing Seminar

Course Description: 

The aim of the seminar is to to offer practical help for second-year Cultural Heritage students to work out the content and structure of their thesis based on their defended thesis prospectus. Students will prepare research materials and presentations to show their critical approach to existing literature, to develop their own approach to the topic and in order to summarize the results of the research. In this way, it is intended that students will finalize the structure of the thesis by the end of the term and produce one analytical chapter from their thesis. All presentations will be discussed by their peers and the instructors over the course of the seminar.

The work of second year students will also be connected to thesis planning preparations of the first year students. The group of second year Cultural Heritage students will contribute to the discussion and evaluation of thesis proposals prepared by first year students, while first year students will take part in the discussion of thesis chapters prepared by second year Cultural Heritage students.

Learning Outcomes: 

By preparing their own pieces of writing and presentations students will hone their critical skills in assessing relevant scholarly studies as well as their skills in assessing typical genres in the field of Cultural Heritage. They will develop critical skills by discussion of presented materials. In addition they will get practice evaluating the oral presentations they hear in class, learn through evaluation of their peers and the instructors of the written parts of their thesis.

Assessment: 

Graded assessment will be based on:

1. Written work: submitted chapter (50%)
The revised version of the submitted chapter, taking into account the most important comments on the oral presentation, should be uploaded by 11 January 2017 noon.

2. Presentations (thesis critique, critical evaluation of a heritage document) (25%)
