The Permeability of the Iron Curtain. Counter-Culture in the 60s, 70s and 80s in East Central Europe.

Course Description:

Continuing the series of courses I have given on a comparative study of counter-culture in East-Central Europe, with Balázs Trencsényi, Dragan Klaic and Ioana Macrea-Toma, dealing with various aspects such as rock-music, theatre, film, secret services, I will provide now a general overview, focusing on theoretical writing on counter-culture and provide a historical panorama of the principal actors of the counter-cultural scene: rock bands, happening artists, performers. The historical context of youth movements, samizdat culture, and police repression will also be considered.

Learning Outcomes:

A familiarity with the recent past of a territory of culture usually neglected in historical discourse, and now approached with adequate theoretical tools.
