A Personal Welcome

Welcome to the Department of Medieval Studies at the Central European University!

Our Department has a distinguished record in both teaching and research. To date, we have awarded more than 500 MA and 100 PhD degrees and have students enrolled to our programs or visiting through the ERASMUS and other exchange programs from five continents. Our dedicated faculty members provide students in the department with an innovative and engaging curriculum. Our courses and thesis supervision incorporate many aspects of the material and spiritual world from Late Antiquity to the Early Modern period covering the whole of Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean.

As one of the most active research departments within CEU, our faculty members and students are involved in several research projects and publications, and play an active role in running CEMS (Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies) at CEU as well as the Early Modern Studies (EMS), The Worldwide Medieval Network CARMEN and MECERN (Medieval Central Europe Research Network) in Europe and beyond. We are fortunate to have a friendly and engaged office staff to support our academic programs and research. Budapest is an attractive city in which to live and work, providing another kind of rewarding experience for our graduate students from many parts of the world. We welcome all enquiries from prospective students and visitors with an interest in our activities.

Together with my colleagues, I hope to meet many of you in the future as students or as colleagues,

Katalin Szende
